Project Goals and Objectives

To protect the Cabang area and the remaining wildlife including the remaining wild herds of elephants and secondly to document the remaining numbers of wild elephants and tigers inside the northern section of the TNWK.

Through the project activities the following objectives shall be met:

  1. Placing camera traps and collecting data in the Cabang area of the TNWK for an initial period of 12 months
  2. Collecting data every month from the camera traps, conducting surveys and then re-placing them in new locations that are planned to increase the capture range of the project.
  3. Document wildlife and protected areas of the Way Kambas National Park using camera trap technology
  4. Conduct 7 day foot patrols once per month to increase the amount of protection for this area.

The data collected will assist in the protection of the Cabang area and the remaining wild elephants and tigers.

  • Patrol Units
    • 6 patrol staff trekking into the Cabang area for 7 days of TNWK to survey and protect against illegal activity being carried out inside the national park.

Objective 2: Camera traps and the collection of data and the use of such data to help build information on remaining wild herds in the Cabang Area

  • Placing camera traps
    • As patrols are conducted cameras are placed and data also collected to help protect the Cabang area.

The conservation project leader for the Berdiri foundation will coordinate all involvement with the ERU team leaders to help provide the best solution for the above objectives over the following twelve months.

Project Benefits

The following achievements will be reached by the proposed project:

  • Protecting the Cabang area with regular foot patrols
  • Preventing further damage to the Cabang area
  • Successful gathering of data to help in surveying the remaining populations of elephants in the Cabang area of the TNWK
  • Data collected will help document the number of species throughout the Cabang area of the TNWK making it more viable and more potential to protect

Such achievements will significantly contribute to a sustainable conservation of Sumatran elephants and their habitat in Way Kambas National Park.
